At Agile Leader Academy, our emphasis is on training, coaching, and supporting leaders through times of exponential change characterized by hyper-competition and overall VUCA. However, even the most well-intended leaders can only create an environment in which their organizations and people can thrive. All too often, what we see happening today is what we would call Agile Theatre: the imposition of prescriptive methods, processes and tools which rob the workforce of true agency and create “feature factories”, relentless machines that carry on at an unsustainable pace without regard to the true needs and context of the organization and its people at heart.

It is only once Psychological safety has been attained at what Tim Clark, author of the 4 stages of Psychological Safety, calls the “Challenger” level that an organization can hope to capture and apply systemic learnings in order to foster true breakthrough innovation.

For any of this to happen, teams and individuals must be allowed to find ways of working that suit the circumstances in which they find themselves – and must also have the agency to experiment with improving those ways of working, all within the context of following a common vision.

In our experience, the best way to foster agency is to set aside prescriptive frameworks in order to allow this experimentation and learning to take place. And the best way that we have found to do this is the agnostic and pragmatic philosophy of Disciplined Agile. This is because frameworks that offer a one-size-fits-all approach do not teach you how to grow beyond them.
